What is OHSC?

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a specialized health insurance required for international students studying in Australia. It is mandatory for all student visa holders and must be maintained for the entire duration of their studies. OSHC provides coverage for various healthcare needs, including some hospital treatments, emergency ambulance services, visits to the doctor, and limited pharmaceutical expenses. This insurance ensures that students have access to essential medical services and can manage their health care needs while studying abroad.

What do you get with OHSC?

What is not included with OSHC?

Be aware that your student health insurance policy may not cover certain medical services and treatments. Common exclusions include:

  • Treatments not covered by the Australian public health system
  • Care needed while traveling to or from Australia
  • Costs that could be covered by compensation or damages
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Treatments arranged before traveling to Australia
  • Non-emergency ambulance transportation
  • Transportation of students or their dependents into or out of Australia
  • IVF and assisted reproduction services

Travel insurance

What does travel insurance cover?

4 things you need to know

  • Travel insurance doesn’t protect you from yourself

Your claim could be voided if the insurer finds that you acted irresponsibly. It’s important to consider this before engaging in risky behavior, such as consuming excessive alcohol or riding a moped without wearing a helmet, as these actions might jeopardize your coverage.

  • Rules about renting motorcycles and scooters on your holiday

Travel insurance will cover you only if you are riding with a valid Australian motorcycle license or an appropriate license from the country you’re in. Additionally, you must be wearing a helmet and adhere to any restrictions on engine size specified by the policy. Ensuring you meet these conditions is crucial for maintaining coverage while riding.

  • You might need to pay more for activities such as skiing and motorcycling

You can add this coverage when applying online. Most Australian insurers provide a list of covered activities in their Product Disclosure Statements (PDS), which often includes many activities at no additional cost. It’s a good idea to review this list to understand which activities are included in your policy.

  • You won’t always be covered for natural disasters and pandemics:

If you purchase your insurance policy after a natural disaster or a pandemic has become a “known event” (such as being widely reported in the news), you generally will not be covered for issues related to that event. However, there is an exception for the COVID-19 pandemic, as coverage for certain COVID-19-related claims may still be available. Always check the specific terms of your policy for detailed information.
